Mountain Kilimanjaro Routes

Kilimanjaro Machame Route

The Machame Route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most popular and scenic trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers breathtaking landscapes, from lush rainforests to alpine deserts, and provides excellent acclimatization opportunities, increasing your chances of a successful summit.

This route typically takes 6 to 7 days, allowing trekkers to gradually adjust to the altitude. The trail includes the famous Barranco Wall, stunning views of Kibo Peak, and a rewarding summit attempt from Barafu Camp. Although it is a more challenging trek compared to the Marangu Route, the Machame Route is preferred for its high success rate and scenic beauty.

Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route

The Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic and less crowded trails to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It offers breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and a high success rate due to its excellent acclimatization profile.

This route typically takes 7 to 8 days to complete, allowing climbers to adjust to the altitude gradually. The trek begins at Lemosho Gate (2,100m) on the western side of the mountain, passing through lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m).

The Lemosho Route is ideal for trekkers seeking a less crowded and highly scenic climb with a greater chance of a successful summit. It is one of the best choices for experiencing the beauty of Kilimanjaro with Bush Lion Trekking and Tours!

Kilimanjaro Marangu Route

The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the easiest and most comfortable way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route with hut accommodations, making it a great choice for climbers who prefer not to camp in tents.

This route takes 5 or 6 days to complete, depending on the itinerary chosen. The 5-day option is more challenging due to less acclimatization time, while the 6-day option allows for an extra day at Horombo Hut to improve success rates.

Kilimanjaro Rongai Route

The Rongai Route is the only Kilimanjaro trail that starts from the northern side, near the Kenya-Tanzania border. It offers a quieter and more remote experience compared to other routes, making it ideal for trekkers who prefer less traffic and a gradual ascent. The scenery is diverse, with breathtaking views of the Kenyan plains, alpine desert, and the glacier-covered summit.

This route is drier than the southern routes, making it a great option during the rainy season. The typical time to complete the Rongai Route is 6 to 7 days, with the extra day improving acclimatization and increasing summit success rates.
